TeleConferencing, TeleCommuting & TeleComputing

This paper reviews the current status of TeleConferencing, TeleCommuting and TeleComputing technologies for audio, audio-graphic and video systems. It will define some of the more important common factors that contribute to a shared definition of the practicality of remote-meetings. It presents an overview of the Barrister West uses that are available to occupants of the complex. We will explain the basic technical components that we will make available. It also briefly discusses various applications or uses for this technology. TeleConferencing, TeleCommuting, and TeleComputing in business, education, and government have grown exponentially over the last three years. Specific applications vary widely, therefore this paper strives to give a working understanding of the technologies and the practical solutions offered at Barrister West.

TeleConferencing, TeleCommuting and TeleComputing combine audio and video media to provide both voice communication and full-motion video images. Also necessary and available at Barrister West is full Data Collaboration and Video Document exchange. The displays may be of people, objects, graphics, video tapes or live images. Virtually anything that can be captured by television camera or fed from another video source, can be shared from your office or conference room at Barrister West, all at the same time.

The advantages of state of the art TeleConferencing, TeleCommuting and TeleComputing, in comparison to standard audio and graphics, at Barrister West you will have the bandwidth to display images in full motion. This capability provides a social presence that, in many cases, resembles face-to-face meetings, referred to in the industry as ‘continuous presence', and it empowers conferees to see the facial expressions and physical demeanor of every participant in the meeting, while not leaving the office.

Speaking of leaving the office, lets look at some typical costs involved in a ‘meeting.’ Your key person gets up in the morning and drives to the airport. Parks in the lot. Buys an airplane ticket and flies to another city. Catches a cab. Finds the meeting place and gets ready for the meeting. (Let’s hope that they brought everything with them!) Now, let’s have a good lunch! Back to the meeting and hope to cram in all of the necessities before that mad dash, in the taxi, to the airport. Then the late trip home, and so on and so on.

You paid for every step in that process. Moreover, if everything went perfectly, you lost the production of that employee, or yourself, for that entire day.

Now, what would that cost be if you had to send two or more people?

We have not taken into consideration the probability that some of those key producers may not be too keen on flying these days!

This is an example of an added value awaiting you at Barrister West.

A Working Definition of the Remote Video/Computing World

The term, "teleconferencing," refers to bi-directional (simultaneous two-way) electronic communications between two or more groups, or between three or more individuals, who are in separate locations. I use the term TeleConferencing to cover all forms conferencing activities, both audio and video.

In order to inter-connect the participants, TeleConferencing makes use of TeleCommunications channels that range from common telephone lines to satellite links. The only requirement is that the medium be interactive, giving the participants at each location the opportunity to actively participate in the TeleConferenced meeting or session, in real time, without distraction.

Common Technical Factors in Teleconferencing

The three major forms of TeleConferencing are audio, audio graphic (including computer conferencing), and video. Although these three methods differ in specific technologies employed, they have several factors in common that contribute to this shared definition of TeleTonferencing; that is, they:

  • use a TeleCommunications channel and station equipment enabling reliable, high quality communication between all of the networked points;
  • link individuals or groups at multiple locations;
  • are interactive and provide real-time two-way communication in an environment that duplicates as closely as possible a single room grouping of all of participants, with all required materials;
  • are dynamic, involving active and natural participation of conferees; and,
  • feature a technical control center to coordinate and supervise technical operation and origination facilities.

    Additionally, the core technical components of any TeleConferencing system must include:

  • equipment, including facilities, wiring and required connectivity;
  • an adequate transmission channel at every grouping point; and,
  • the backbone network configuration including system controls, a telecommunications interface and necessary equipment to "bridge" or link locations in every required multi-point application.

    Beyond these important factors which contribute to the industry-standard shared definition of TeleConferencing, the present state-of-the-art methodology begins to diverge, taking on unique attributes.
